A mini interview with yours truly.

Here's a little quiz about myself as a designer. Sorry it's kind of long and repetitive!
Gives you an idea anyway!

Brief  paragraph about your collection:
It is my aim to transport others into the same hazy, nostalgic, story land I dream of & try to capture this in my work. I love to use images and items people can relate to and provoke memories of happy moments gone by.
My passion lies with embroidery & creating embellished, forever pieces by layering textiles effects to result in wardrobe favourites to treasure.
The haphazard, clumsy, hand drawn nature of my prints clash with the intricate, delicate embroideries I love to create.

-Spring/Summer 2011 womens wear
-Loose, light silks and viscose perfect for an active, summer day.
-Deep, rich, vintage inspired colour.
-Imagery taken from objects associated with a summer fete.
-Glossy, metallic effects throughout fabrics and application.
-Simple printing techniques and digital prints encrusted with embroidery and beading combinations.
- Traditional embroidery techniques- brought up to date and in season with quirky silhouettes and prints.
-Clothes with volume and movement to compliment the free, hand-drawn prints.
-Swingy, quirky, nostaligic silhouette.

Who is your ideal customer?
My ideal customer is someone who has a fun eye for fashion, who has a confident, feminine but quirky style. She would appreciate beautiful textiles and value vintage inspired, delicate clothing to cherish.

What is their demographic?
Aged between 18-40 but anyone young at heart.
Location would be a leafy suburb full of character, just outside a main, busy city.

What department or speciality stores would you like to sellyour collection to?
Small, original boutiques that offer a personal shopping experience such as Hoxton Boutique, and Dover Street Market in London, but also larger established stores to reach more customers such as Browns and Selfridges.

Which items / products in the collection do you feel are most newsworthy / editorial - worthy? Why?
My swing coat and short suit are both the most editorial pieces, they are new takes on old classics that showcase my textiles well. The coat, showing a lot of movement and displaying my favourite print which I feel is current but with a vintage feel. The short suit shows a quirky silhouette and holds background to some intricate embroidery displayed clearly across the shoulder area. These pieces are contrasting but sit well together as a collection, they both reflect my design strengths best.

What are your design strengths?
My design strengths sit with combining colour and texture using textiles. A combination of print and embroidery/ embellishment to create new fabrics. My passion lies with textiles but I often design these textiles with fashion in mind

What type of designer are you?
I am a textile, print and embroidery designer for fashion. My enthusiasm is combining prints and embellishment together to create beautiful pieces often layering techniques to produce new, contemporary fabrics with a vintage twist. I dabble in womenswear to design clothing to compliment my textiles.

What companies would you like to work / collaborate with?
I would love to work with Tim Walker the photographer, I have been a huge fan of his work for years and love the dreamy, nostalgic quality of his fashion shoots. In terms of designers I would love to collaborate with designers who I admire and feel relate to my work such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney, Erdem, Chloe, Moschino, Moschino Cheap & Chic and Temperley.

What would you like to be known for?
I would like to be known for beautiful embroidery and striking, youthful prints but with a sophisticated edge. A collage of techniques, merged to create new fabrics.

My heart and soul. (A brief life story!)

"My passion lies with hand embroidery & creating embellished, forever pieces by layering textiles effects to result in wardrobe favourites to treasure.
Smudgy, printed fabrics with a vintage feeling, combining rich colour, texture and metallics that catch the light. "

For months on end, my life was taken over with creating my own collection for my final show at Northumbria University. I have never worked so hard as I did in that 4th and final year. I called my collection "Muddled Summer Memories" and designed and digitally printed all my own fabrics (taken from paintings and embroideries I did) and then embroidered back into these fabrics and made 6 outfits for the catwalk show. (Sounds simple enough?!) With deadlines and other projects running alongside this and days of hand embroidery it was definately tough! We had a show at the Baltic in Newcastle in May (I'll post those photos first) and then I was also chosen to show in Graduate Fashion Week in London in June (Second photos). I wanted to create a collection that I loved, and others would love too. And guess what?! I think I did it! So this feels quite personal to post this on here and show you,but here it is. I hope you like it. :)

Let The Blogging Commence!

Hello Followers!
So I am pretending to be Carrie and starting a little blog to channel my thoughts, musings, opinions, current work and obviously some fashion stuff along the way. I should probably introduce myself, my name is Sophie Dee and I am a Fashion Textile Designer. Hello There! I have just graduated Fashion from Northumbria University and will post some photos from my final show as a place to start. I live in the North East which isn't your typical place to look for fashion inspiration but I keep my eyes open! I am a lover of many things embellished, embroidered, printed and vintage inspired.
So here we go...wish me luck!
